Brain Freeze

Image
As a 17 year old girl who prioritizes health by staying active, I dread the time I get old. I don’t want to feel quarantined in my home, like my grandma and the other elderly people in her apartment. The only time they get up is when they have to go to the bathroom — and even then, some old people can't get up to go. I value the time I get to go and shower and feel relaxed, but most old people need someone to do it for them, which is nothing close to the comforting and soothing experience they once felt. I fear losing the feeling of being alive through exercise, which, until recently, felt inevitable.  Over winter break this year, my friend and I went to Ann Arbor to run a 5 mile race for the winter Trail fest run event. To our surprise, it started to blizzard the day of the run, but we still decided to go because we expected a lighthearted event with fellow teenage runners. Oh, we were so wrong. I looked left, an old fella. Took a gander to my right, there was a friend of my gran...

Rolling Away

Creativity is the involvement of original ideas to make or do something new. It’s not easy to be creative, but sometimes the most unique ideas can be thought of on the most random days. For me, it was a snowy day.  My dad was out of town, so the house was left with four girls who, for the most part, relied on my dad to take care of “boy” stuff. If there was a 2nd man in the household, it would be me, which should be a concern if you know me on a personal level because I am a tiny girl who cannot hold a toolbox for more than five seconds. I know more than the others in my family because I have sudden concerns for my future independence, so my dad and I work on basic human survival skills like learning how to pump air into a tire or using a lawn mower. But a snow blower was not a concern of mine back then. This was all until me, my sisters, and mom, were stranded at home with a snowy driveway and no idea how to use a snowblower. Of course, my mom and sisters relied on me to figure i...

Why Would You Do That?

Image
People do things that are redundant to their overall well being due to lack of better judgement and understanding due to distraction from environmental and psychological factors. Sometimes, the act of endlessly doing something sounds challenging and impossible. Think of a time where you wished you did not have the amount of work that you were tasked to do, like homework. You wished to instead do nothing at all and just chill. Ok. Wish granted. You are now doing nothing for hours, staring at a wall, and have no one to talk to. That   would feel impossible. The repetition of an action for too long eventually becomes exhausting, leading to unsatisfactory feelings. It gets boring because you are alone and not motivated by any external factors. However, humans surprise themselves in certain instances as they become attached to actions that do involve external factors, resulting in a pleasing effect on them. If someone was prompted to watch TikTok for 12 hours, they would not break a sw...

Swinging From Mrs. Sam

Image
After long and careful thought of attempting to recall a teacher that made me feel like “everything I said was wrong”, similar to Me Talk Pretty One Day , I feel very blessed to say I have never had a teacher who made me feel that way. However, Mrs. Sam did, but she was no teacher. Rather, my elementary recess supervisor.  As a child, I enjoyed going to school because I got to learn and play with friends. All of the things that made me happiest about school had to stay within the classroom. During lunch recess on the playground, I was unable to enjoy myself and friends on the playground because of my intense fear of getting yelled at by Mrs. Sam.  One recess, I felt risky and decided to have fun. I figured the most rebellious, yet safest activity to not get in trouble, was to swing on the swings. The more I swung, the closer I felt Mrs. Sam’s eyes get, as she searched for something to yell at me for. Although, these eyes did not stop the swinging, I heard a whistle blow, Mrs...

Who Is That.

The satirical article “Justin Bieber Forgets his Wife's Name” uses exaggeration, irony, and word choice to highlight how idolized celebrities, who are seen as role models, do not experience deep, meaningful love typically seen online. The writer begins the story creating a sense of urgency, like a life or death situation, but is quickly dulled down with Bieber’s lack of intense fear. To treat the situation in a minimalistic manner, he turns to the reporters as his peers when he realizes the slight significance of forgetting his wife's name. Bieber avoids the accountability and superficiality of his relationship, as he repeats “babe” and hopes the name comes to mind eventually. However, this plan backfires when he realizes she is starting to “catch on”, adding comedic tension because the situation is less humorous, but his obliviousness is starting to backfire and could lead to consequences. The surprises did not end there; even after six years' worth of devotion to this wom...

Spill the Arabic

Image
You either got it or you don't. Speaking Arabic is something I do not have. One of my biggest insecurities is a question I get asked most frequently. "Speaking" is a blessing most people don’t think twice about, however, it is all I think about sometimes. People are confused that l don’t speak Arabic for a few reasons. Arabic is all my parents speak, my sisters can speak it, and I have slight broken English. All not these signs are common characteristics of someone who speaks another language. From coming out of the womb to being a junior in high school, my parents have spoken Arabic to me. My parents were learning English at the same time I was, since they were new to the country. All I heard as a child was Arabic and some English from the television, yet somehow, my first word was in English. “More.” “More” what? English? Wish came true because that’s all I speak. Since I grew up with Arabic, I would expect it to stick with me. However, from the sixteen years of living...

Target’s Target

Image
Target has a huge support system. Why? Because Target is a huge support system. When taking a brief stroll in a Target store, you are faced with it all. Advertisements with disabled people, sections with pride clothing, and they include all races. Companies can be inclusive for different reasons. Some choose to be inclusive because they have genuine support, and others are inclusive for popularity. In my opinion, Target wholeheartedly cares about their customers. Target includes every group of people possible, so even if this includes outcast groups, they are still making a difference by giving them representation. This representation makes the people who are uncommonly advertised feel seen. Even when they lose sales, they still have not stopped being inclusive towards certain groups, which shows their genuine support. Stores like Target are including these groups to normalize their existence in the public eye. This shows that they are not just doing it. To get more customers they’...
