Beauty In the Film
Catharsis is the purification or release of emotions in a work of art. A work of art that made me feel one of the biggest emotional releases known to mankind is Disney’s family film Beauty and the Beast. Love, emotions, and character arc development are what give a deep catharsis effect on viewers.
Belle, the main character, begins with a deep hatred for the Beast as he captures her father in his castle, and she must sacrifice her life to save him. Since Belle is trapped in the castle instead of her father, she makes the most of it by getting to know the Beast and making friends with the “people” there. Watching their relationship develop as they play in the snow and bond over books, the audience is eager to see what happens next. The viewer feels a connection with the storyline, visuals, and musical elements. The audience’s connection with the characters runs deep as the different songs each had unique emotions, making the movie more emotionally complex. The song “Beauty and the Beast” was emotionally appealing as we watched Belle and the Beast have their big moment together, realizing their love for each other. A visual that makes the viewers emotional is when the Beast is shot, and all Belle does is hold him. After shedding a few tears, we watch the Beast become human again, overcoming his curse of finding true love and becoming kind. The passion seen between Belle and the Beast makes them feel powerful enough to fight the man who could not fit in his clothes because of his strength, Gaston. These moments teach the viewers about compassion and love.
These cathartic effects made me feel so passionately about the movie, making me dress up as Belle for several days in a row, trying to find the most frightening boy in the first grade, you name it. I felt the cathartic effect not only watching the movie but watching plays of Beauty and the Beast. From Belle trying to save her father to the Beast transforming into a man, made me go through an emotional crisis. Beauty and the Beast’s character development, creative storyline, and artistic elements make the film a cathartic experience for all viewers. This is an important film and explains why many films today try to reach that same level of connection with viewers creatively and movingly. Catharisis makes the movies we love.
Hi Tara! Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorites from Disney as well. There was always something so magically attractive about it, and reading your analysis helped me realize more about what it was that I liked so much about it. I also really loved your humour when you talked about trying to find the most frightening boy in first grade! This was so fun to read, and I’ll look forward to reading your next blog!
