God Save Us From the Acorn!

Collegeboard is the TJ Eckleburg to today’s high school students. TJ Eckleburg is the mystery man that the people in the Valley of Ashes look up to (literally), similar to high school students looking up to Collegeboard. Although TJ Eckleburg is an oculist, he has eternal blindness to the poor. This is similar to how Collegeboard has eternal blindness to students' complaints about the application process and the skyrocketing prices. Students try to become something in life and they need the help of Collegeboard. However, nothing has been done over the years to support these needy students—the same way the poor in the Valley of Ashes will never get their eyes checked. Regardless of one’s financial status, it’s hard to get the help needed. Especially in the confusing winds of Collegeboard’s website, similar to the winds of the Valley of Ashes. No matter how many SATs high school students take or the begging of the people from the Valley of Ashes, the big guys will not care. But of course, no one’s going to do anything about any of these problems. These disregarding acts represent the general struggle of the large masses of the poor against the small group of rich. Despite their numbers and zeal, it often happens that the poor can never win. The eyes of TJ Eckleburg will always be watching the poor of the city of ashes without doing anything, while Collegeboard will continue to torment students until they leave and for many generations to come.

  1. Hi Tara! I really enjoyed your blog and I think that it is very clever. I like how you compared T.J. Eckleburg with a real life situation that everyone in our class has to deal with, collegeboard. You really appealed to your audience because your audience is your classmates, and this is an AP class. Overall, great job Tara!

  2. Hi Tara!! I love the intro and the comparison to help students relate and understand what your point is. This is really interesting take on these two things that I never would have thought of. I also really liked your title.

  3. Hey Tara! Your title was very clever and it made me laugh today. I never really thought that much about College Board itself and what it was doing, but this gave me a new perspective! I’ll keep what you said here in mind, and I’m looking forward to your next blog :)
